Integrasi Platform Tiktok dalam Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris Maritim: Studi Persepsi Taruna Program Studi Nautika
Abstract
This study explores nautical cadets’ perceptions of TikTok-based speaking activities in Maritime English instruction at Sorong Merchant Marine Polytechnic. The research addresses the pedagogical potential of social media in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) by examining its role in enhancing cadets’ engagement, motivation, and oral communication skills. A descriptive quantitative approach with a one-group pretest-posttest design was applied, involving 17 cadets from the Nautical Studies Program. Data were collected using a 25-item perception questionnaire encompassing six dimensions: Engagement and Enjoyment, Perceived Effectiveness, Motivation and Creativity, Usability and Accessibility, Social Interaction and Peer Learning, and Challenges and Drawbacks. Descriptive statistics and paired sample t-tests indicated significant improvements across all dimensions, with the greatest gains in Perceived Effectiveness (+2.16), Motivation and Creativity (+2.11), and Engagement and Enjoyment (+1.89), while Challenges and Drawbacks decreased (–0.94), reflecting reduced anxiety and greater ease with the platform. These results demonstrate that TikTok shows pedagogical potential as an effective, accessible, and motivating medium to support oral proficiency in Maritime English. The study provides practical implications for integrating digital media into vocational ESP instruction to foster more confident and communicative maritime professionals, although further research with larger samples and experimental designs is recommended.
