PENGARUH EMOTIONAL QUOTIENT (EQ) TERHADAP TINGKAT GEJALA DEPRESI MAHASISWA TAHUN PERTAMA FAKULTAS KEDOKTERAN UNIVERSITAS TANJUNGPURA

Abstract


First-year medical students are in the transitional stage from late adolescence to early adulthood, a phase that affects emotional maturity and makes them vulnerable to various stressors that can trigger depressive symptoms. This study aims to determine the relationship between emotional intelligence and the level of depressive symptoms among first-year students of the Medical Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Tanjungpura University. This analytical study employed a cross-sectional design using the Emotional Quotient (EQ) questionnaire and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). A total of 82 first-year students participated as respondents, selected through consecutive sampling, and the data were analyzed using Spearman’s rank test with the assistance of SPSS 23.0. The results showed that most students had high emotional intelligence (54.9%), followed by moderate (32.92%) and very high (12.19%). The majority of depressive symptoms were in the normal range (61%), followed by mild (19.5%), moderate (13.4%), and severe (6.1%). Statistical analysis revealed a significant relationship between emotional intelligence and depressive symptoms (p = 0.00). In conclusion, there is a significant negative correlation between emotional intelligence and depressive symptoms, indicating that higher emotional intelligence is associated with lower levels of depressive symptoms in first-year medical students.
